DC3 Challenge

DC3 is the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center. They sponsor a challenge each year for government workers, commercial security professionals, civilians, military, graduate school, undergraduate school, community colleges, and high schools.

Last year, the winners in each category included:

  • Anne Arundel Community College
  • Arizona State University
  • Department of Defense
  • The Defense Criminal Investigative Service
  • Northrop Grumman
  • Dakota State University
  • Poolesville High School

Poolesville High School had a team of four seniors participate; their team name was AlphaPHS. They finished as the top high school team in the world! Way to go Kevin, Eric, Brendan, and Jack! You can see them with their awards at:

As part of their awards, the four boys and two of us teachers got to attend the DC3 Cyber Crime Conference in Atlanta in January (with most expenses paid). We flew down on a Saturday and stayed at the conference hotel. On Sunday and Monday, we attended cybersecurity training put on by DC3 professionals. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we attended the conference sessions.

We all had a great time at the conference! There were 1200 security professionals from the United States and other countries, including members of the FBI, NSA, CIA, Homeland Security, and numerous law enforcement and judicial professionals from across the US.

Special thanks go to Allan Paller (SANS Institute) and Jim Christy (DC3 Futures).
